Is Sclerotherapy Right For Me? Common Questions for Treating Visible Leg Veins

We love treatments that are tried and true, and Sclerotherapy has been around for over 250 years, dating back to the 1850s! The technique has (thankfully) evolved dramatically, but this safe, fast, and effective treatment can clear most visible cosmetic leg veins with lasting results.

As a child, did you notice visible veins on the legs of your parents or grandparents? Remember tracing them lovingly, at the beach or when sleeping over? Noticing visible veins on our own legs isn’t quite as lovely; the discolouration can be distracting or make us self conscious. Veins are often an inherited trait and can show up over time or become more noticeable after hormonal changes, pregnancy, or immobility. Sclerotherapy is a quick, lasting solution for spider veins that doesn’t require surgery or downtime. Let’s explore the potential of this treatment together.

How does Sclerotherapy work?

Targeted injections with a solution called Sclerodex® can effectively fade red, blue and purple, visible spider veins (also called telangiectasias) during Sclerotherapy treatment. This solution is carefully injected into targeted veins with a tiny needle in short sessions. Sclerodex® is essentially a mixture of sugar and salt, so it’s easy for your body to metabolize, recovery is swift, and adverse reactions are rare. Even one treatment can noticeably clear up redness and the visibility of spider veins on legs by 20-30%.

Does Sclerotherapy hurt?

This treatment is mildly uncomfortable since it involves tiny injections with a fine needle, but the short treatment time makes it very manageable for most patients. You might notice some slight redness or swelling after treatment.

How long does Sclerotherapy treatment take?

Each session lasts 15-45 minutes and any bruising or redness should subside within three to six weeks, at which point you’ll start noticing results. You can optimize results by wearing compression socks, staying well hydrated, and following your specialist’s advice to heal effectively.

Is Sclerotherapy covered by MSP?

Sclerotherapy treats small cosmetic spider veins, so this treatment is not covered by MSP. Sclerotherapy treats the smaller veins that look like fine red, blue, or purple lines or branches that you can see on the surface of your skin. Uniquely, Philosophy MD is also experienced in the treatment of slightly deeper, blue reticular veins. If you’re looking for a solution for true varicose veins that are aching, itchy, blue, or green, you may be eligible for another type of treatment which may be covered. Ask your primary care provider for a referral to a vascular surgeon or other vascular specialist if this describes what you’re experiencing.

How much does Sclerotherapy cost?

At Philosophy MD, Sclerotherapy starts at $150. We recommend multiple sessions or a combination of treatments for most patients, to optimize the outcomes you’re looking for. Costs vary based on your treatment goals and the area(s) being treated. Sclerotherapy is the primary treatment for reticular and spider leg veins, and typically requires fewer sessions than laser treatment alone

Where can I find Sclerotherapy near me?

At Philosophy MD, we see patients from across Victoria, but we also have patients visit us from the neighbouring communities of Nanaimo, Saanichton and North Saanich, Salt Spring Island, Vancouver, and beyond. Wherever you live in Canada, make sure your treatment specialist is someone you feel comfortable with; they should be able to answer your questions, explain what to expect from Sclerotherapy, and guide you through the treatment from consultation through to enjoying your results. Reading reviews, booking a consultation, and asking about experience are all great ways to make sure you’re choosing the right clinic for your sclerotherapy treatments.
